| Customer Reviews: Old, but still effective March 22, 2006 M. M Magliaro (Philipsburg, PA United States) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book was published in the early 1970s. As such, the circuit designs and components used are simplistic by today's standards. There are no integrated circuits used, for example.
Regardless, all these circuits are excellent. They include lighting effects, transistorized train controllers, sound effects, triggers, detectors, and many other useful things. I have built many of the circuits in this book. They all work great and can be used for any scale train layout.
Most importantly, the components used are all inexpensive and easy to find, even today. And Thorne does an excellent job of explaining how devices like transistors, diodes, etc, WORK. You'll come away not only being able to build very useful electronic circuits for your layout, but you'll have a good working knowledge of electronics.
Even if you've never soldered a wire before, buy this book. I used it when I was 12 years old back in the 1970s, and I still use it today.
